Time change

Each Friday (or Saturday, depending on how lazy or sick I’m feeling), I post Flashback Friday, where I use St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Examen as a guide and usually ask the following questions: For what are you least grateful this past week? For what are you most grateful this past week?

This week I’m most and least grateful for the same thing: My wife is switching shifts from 4 p.m. to midnights to midnights to 8 a.m. this month. On the one hand, it’s good that we’re going to be able to see more of each other, but on the other hand, it’s going to wreak havoc on her sleep schedule — and not help me with my reading. I know that sounds selfish, but let me explain and elaborate more (in other words, try to dig myself out of the hole I’ve already dug for myself with my wife).

It’s only been two days, but already it’s weird not sleeping together.

It’s odd not looking over and seeing her, and instead seeing the space where she usually is.

In her defense, though, I am a notorious snorer and sometimes, as a result, she doesn’t get much sleep. This way, she’ll be able to get the sleep she needs when I am at work at the library. Not that it will be easy making the transition, but once it’s made, I think (and she thinks) it will be all right.

Now about that little thing about my not being able to read as much :), I really do treasure the time when I’m able to come home from work and pick up a book (or e-book on my e-reader). I can catch up on a lot of reading…

…but to be honest, I usually don’t. Most of the time I end up endlessly surfing on Facebook or watching some series on Netflix. So I’ll just continue reading during my dinner hour at work and finding other times to read in between, sometimes even when she is home — as it was before. As Mr. Marley sang:

“Every little thing going to be all right.”

(Um, how did I do, hon? Did I dig myself out of the hole sufficiently…or at least enough that I won’t be sleeping on the couch…oh, wait, I don’t have to anymore :P)

For what are you least and most grateful this past week?

A cold, but no cough…eh, it could be worse

Each Friday (or Saturday, depending on how lazy or sick I’m feeling), I post Flashback Friday, where I use St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Examen as a guide and usually ask the following questions: For what are you least grateful this past week? For what are you most grateful this past week?

This week I’m not most grateful for anything. However, I’m least grateful for one thing: having a cold, ruining the last part of my week. Not only did it take away a day of work, but also took away today when I was supposed to go with my wife to her 20th college reunion. It hit me on Wednesday, but due to scheduling conflicts, I was unable to take off work until yesterday, so I had to work through Thursday, not feeling well either. Now that I think about it, maybe I am most grateful for one thing: that I don’t have a cough with this cold. It’s just my nose running and headaches, so it could be worse…

For what are you least and most grateful this past week?

Rain, rain, go away!

Each Friday (or Saturday, depending on how lazy I’m feeling), I post Flashback Friday, where I use St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Examen as a guide and usually ask the following questions: For what are you least grateful this past week? For what are you most gratefl this past week?

Least grateful

Rain: Even as I write this, it’s raining and it’s been raining most of the week…at least when I want to mow the lawn, which hopefully would be one last time this year. Also I have a four-day weekend this weekend, starting today and going through Tuesday, and it would have been nice to be able to get out at least once day. I think rain is in the forecast for the next few days too (oh, wait, Tuesday looks like ZERO percent chance of rain…things already are looking up). Plus I was planning on catching up some reading, so the rain, if it comes, really won’t hurt those plans.

Most grateful

Drama finally over: The drama to which I referred last week is finally over. It wasn’t fun testifying in court as a witness, but I believe it was necessary to help the plaintiff and her family.

For what are you least grateful and most grateful this past week?

Getting to know you

Each Friday (or Saturday, depending on how lazy I’m feeling), I post Flashback Friday, where I use St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Examen as a guide and usually ask the following questions: For what are you least grateful this past week? For what are you most grateful this past week?

Not keeping up with y’all: Lately, I’ve been caught up with this phenomenon called Instagram. As a result, I’ve started “following” more people, most of you bloggers. However, with some of you, I don’t follow your blogs and I know I should. Many of you, I already “follow” your blogs, but often don’t comment as regularly as I should.

So how do I reach out to those blogs/bloggers that I don’t follow? Well, first, starting today, I’m going through my Instagram list and adding you to my Google Reader (yes, I still use Google Reader, I’ve tried others, but just keep returning). Second, I’m going to make an effort to comment on one of your posts within the next month. I know that might sound lame, but with already 50 blogs I do follow (nothing compared to some of you, I know) and more to come, it will be an accomplishment. Third, if you’re reading this, leave me a comment here and I’ll add you to my reader now.

MOST GRATEFUL

Getting to know you: Even if it’s through Instagram, I’m getting to know you in a small way…and most of you, I can say, based on just this one interaction, are amazing (meaning yes, some of you suck ;)). Also through your photos of family, nature and others, I am seeing the commonality among us all. For the most part, we’re not so different, you and I and yet we are. Each of us express our individuality too through our photos even if through the simple choice of the filters we use.

Now I hope that I can get to know you through your blogs too, those of you that I haven’t gotten to know yet. For those I have gotten to know, I am grateful for you too. You always will be treasured as some of my first friends here in the great world of the Interwebs, and I’m always interested in seeing the facets of yourself you display through your blog and Instagram (and sometimes Facebook and other places too).

For what are you least grateful and most grateful this past week? Do you use Instagram? Let me know your username there and I’ll follow you…oh, and your blog too, of course.

Today’s title is naturally from this song.

I hear music, music, music…

Each Friday (or Saturday, depending on how lazy I’m feeling), I post Flashback Friday, where I use St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Examen as a guide and usually ask the following questions: For what are you least grateful this past week? For what are you most grateful this past week?

Least grateful

Wedding ring too tight: I’ve only had my wedding ring off my left ring finger twice since my wife and I got married more than 15 years ago. The first time, it was to resize it because it was too large for my finger after I had lost some weight. Now this past week, I had to take it off again (with my wife’s help and agreement) for the opposite because I’ve gained too much weight and now the ring is too tight. The easy (and wrong) solution would be to resize it again, but I’ve been wanting (and needing) to lose some weight. Unfortunately, I always start this grandiose goals of losing weight toward the end of summer as winter is just around the corner. I’ve already begun walking to work a little more. Now I just have to continue, despite the weather.

Most Grateful

Free music: Through the generosity of a patron at the library where I work and some of her friends who had extra tickets to the Endless Mountain Music Festival this past week, I was able to enjoy a few concerts last Saturday and Sunday, and this past Wednesday. The first featured a full orchestra with a featured violinist; the second, a pianist joined by a bassist and a drummer for a jazz session; and the third, a trio of a violinist, a cellist and a violaist  (?). I probably enjoyed the first performance the best, because the orchestra played a composition from one of my favorite composers, Jean Sibelius. The second one would have been better in a different venue. As it was, it was in a little theater and should have been in a lounge to fit more the jazz. The third was good, but a little bit off-kilter with music that was not only unfamiliar to most of the attendees, but also “unmelodic” to the listener. I enjoyed the one piece because of that, but it could be a bit off-putting. All in all, though, it was wonderful to hear such talented musicians playing great music in our hometown.

It wasn’t over my head, but I still heard it. :)

So as always, I’ll leave you with the questions: For what are you least grateful and most grateful this past week?
